3/29/18: University of North Texas students gathered at the Library Mall in Denton, Texas after word spread that a small group of Nation Street Preacher demonstrators were there to “outreach” with their racist, anti-gay rhetoric. Counter-protesters held signs, danced, chanted and played instruments to drown out the slurs from the preachers’ megaphone. Counter protesters included Christians, BLM activists and the LGBTQIA community, all joined together to denounce the unwelcome messages.

Aryan Dixit is a co-founder of SCLU and a student at UC San Diego. He has been involved in organizing from a young age, fighting for issues from free speech to menstrual equity (for RutuChakra). He led the successful campaign at UC San Diego to build a center and community for disabled students. Aryan is a published non-fiction author and an experienced organizer having directed nonprofit initiatives in the past.

Daniel Alejandro Soria is a co-founder of SCLU who served as Co-President from 2024-25 and a recent UC San Diego graduate committed to civil rights, constitutional law, and community empowerment. He led the UCSD Disabled Students Commission, spearheading a campaign that secured $17.5 million for disability justice. Daniel has held legal and policy roles with the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee and the D.C. U.S. Attorney’s Office.

<h3>A Little About Us</h3>Students' Civil Liberties Union (SCLU) is a dedicated student-led nonprofit organization based in San Diego, CA. Our mission is to champion civil liberties and amplify the concerns of students. Currently, we focus particularly on immigration rights and the rights of disabled students. With a passionate team of student advocates, we bring a unique perspective and deep understanding of the challenges faced by these communities in educational settings. Our expertise lies in navigating the complex legal and social landscapes to ensure that students are heard, protected, and empowered.<h3>Advocacy Initiatives</h3>As SCLU, we have conducted comprehensive advocacy with a focus on community-oriented grassroots organizing which has included educational workshops, mass demonstrations, court-watching, and policy lobbying. We work closely with students, nonprofits, and educational institutions to promote inclusive policies and practices that respect and uphold civil liberties. Our initiatives have successfully achieved coalition building victories and concessions from academic partners: but more must always be done.<h3>What Can You Do?</h3>SCLU is a conscientiously inclusive organization that firmly believes that every passionate individual can be a strong advocate for community interests when pushed in the right direction. Our efforts require a wide range of skills and expertise. Find Your State-Level Representatives

Students' Civil Liberties Union is working on placing signage, stickers and placards outside public locations such as local businesses, offices, shops, and schools. These signs would indicate specific areas inside are marked as private and act as sanctuary spaces for immigrants. These are areas immigration enforcement cannot enter without a warrant.This campaign also works on safeguarding the rights and successes of undocumented students and community members in San Diego. Thus, for the past few months, SCLU has been canvassing businesses in the City of San Diego to put up signage. DETENTION-FREE SAN DIEGO

Alongside the San Diego TRUST Coalition, Students' Civil Liberties Union has been working on supporting the removal of Flock-connected Automated License Plate Reader Cameras across San Diego (and in California). SAY NO TO SURVEILLANCE

After years of continuous advocacy, our organizers as well as the newly-integrated Blind Snakes Co-operative successfully helped UC San Diego establish the Disability Resource Hub. Our disability justice campaign currently focuses on building mutual aid and community centers for disabled youth across San Diego, as well as informing the academic realm with the creation of a disability studies minor in San Diegan colleges.Check out our website below for more detailed information!
